Our Story

Adam Showers was born in 1819 in Pennsylvania. The 1850 Census shows that his home is in Poland, Mahoning, Ohio where he resides with his wife Elizabeth and three daughters: Mary, Adaline and Sarah. Adam is working as a laborer and holds real estate valued at $200. The parents were born in Pennsylvania and the children in Ohio.

The 1860 Census shows the family has not moved. Adam (41) is a farmer who cannot read or write. His real estate is valued at $300 and his personal property at $500.

In 1863-64 Adam served in the Union's 97th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry as a Private. He also served in Company D, 193rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry (100 days, 1864) also as a Private. Is there a second Adam Showers or did he change Regiments?

The 1870 Census indicates the their post office is now Edinburgh, that they reside in Mahoning Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. Adam (53) is a farmer with real estate valued at $1400 and personal property valued at $400; he is a citizen of the US. Rosanna and John are the only children at home. John (17) works at a brick yard.

With the 1880 Census we learn that Adam (64) is a farmer who cannot write. His father was born in PA, his mother in England. Wife Elizabeth continues to reside with him but the children have all moved out. They continue to live in Mahoning Township very clos to Amos Ripple and their daughter Adaline and their family.

Adam's will was probated 9 June 1894. His will written and signed with Adam's mark on 3 Sep 1879. Wife Elizabeth was to have all property until her death, then all to be divided equally between the four daughters and son listed in the will.

Rosanna lived as a widow until 1927. She is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in North Lima, Mahoning Conty, Ohio.
